Dear esteemed Colleagues and Friends,
It is with great enthusiasm that we extend our warm invitation to you for the upcoming European Society of Surgery ESS Congress, set to take place in the vibrant city of Bari, Italy, on 5-8 October 2025.
As we gather for this highly expected, prestigious international event, we will continue the established ESS tradition of fostering collaboration and innovation among surgeons across Europe.

The focus of the congress will be two-fold: an exchange of knowledge in the ever-evolving field of general surgery and a call to discuss the most important innovations and challenges of our time, including the role of artificial intelligence and trauma surgery in a world torn by multiple wars.
Our core congress themes are multi-faceted and interconnected, ‘Translational innovation, clinical appropriateness and multidisciplinary integration’, and reflect our commitment to considerate practices and long-term sustainability in both clinical and procedural practices and associated environmental impacts. We will delve into this concept throughout the congress, acknowledging the intersection of environmental stewardship and the advancement of transplant care.
With the guidance of an international lineup of experts, we will examine the modern practice of surgery across its multiple iterations and implementations throughout the wider Europe, with a view to bridging ideas and rendering practice more efficient and environmentally responsible.
Bari, a city steeped in rich history and cultural diversity, provides an ideal backdrop for our congress.
Traditionally known as the gateway to the East with its coalescence of catholic and orthodox tradition and with a long-standing history of being a flourishing trade canter, Bari encapsulates the spirit of exchange of ideas, deal-making, mutual respect, cooperation to progress and enlightenment, making it a fitting host for discussions on the future of surgical practice.
Join us in Bari for the ESS Congress 2025, where we will not only fine-tune our knowledge on the latest medical breakthroughs, but also forge a path towards a greener and more sustainable future for general surgery.
Sincerely,
Mario Testini, ESS Society and Congress Chair
Francesco Prete, ESS Congress Scientific Secretary
